Canon EOS M10 – Design and Features The Canon EOS M10 looks fairly similar to Canon’s lead system camera, the EOS M3, but without the main manual controls. It has an ultra-simple design, providing accessibility through being a largely point-and-shoot model. There’s no mode dial up top to switch from manual to aperture priority mode and so on. Instead you get a stills and video shutter button and a switch that flicks between video, stills and Auto. Build quality is just what I’ve come to expect from an entry-level CSC. The Canon EOS M10 is made of plastic, but feels sturdy. Just note that it isn’t waterproof, so avoid taking it in torrential downpours. One feature of note in the Canon EOS M10 is a new kit lens. While the EOS M10’s body isn’t radically more petite than that of the EOS M3, the lens is smaller and lighter than the trusty Canon 18-55mm kit lens. A collapsible design means it takes up fairly little room when not in use, and it weighs only 150g. Its 15-45mm focal length equates to 24-72mm in the usual 35mm standard, which is an acceptable all-round range for both landscapes, portraits and street photography. As you might expect of a basic kit lens, however, it isn’t particularly fast, with maximum aperture of through its range. It should make a decent lower-light handheld lens still, though, since it offers stops of optical image stabilisation. This will let you keep the shutter open that bit longer without instantly making your images blurry. It requires seconds to turn on, focus, and capture an image. Its autofocus system requires to lock and fire when shooting in bright light, and about seconds in dim conditions. That's well behind other entry-level models, including the Panasonic GM1 at AmazonOpens in a new window , which starts in a second, and focuses in in ideal conditions and in dim light. The M10 can fire off images continuously at a fairly good burst rate. You're limited to about 6 images at this pace when shooing in Raw mode, but you can fire off JPGs continuously without noticing a slowdown—just make sure you're using a fast memory card like the 95MBps SanDisk card I used for testing. I used ImatestOpens in a new window to evaluate the image quality that the M10's 18-megapixel APS-C image sensor delivers at different ISO sensitivities. When shooting in bright light the camera will maintain a lower ISO—close to its base 100 sensitivity—automatically. But when working indoors or in dim light, you're going to end up using a higher ISO to get a crisp, blur-free photo. When shooting JPGs, the M10 keeps noise under the acceptable percent threshold through ISO 3200. That's not a class-leading result by any means—the Sony Alpha 6000 keeps noise under control through ISO 12800. A simple number doesn't tell you how much detail is lost due to noise reduction. I took a close look at images from our ISO test scene to get a better idea of how the camera performs—crops are included in the slideshow that accompanies this review. The M10 delivers crisp, detailed results at ISO 100 and 200, but details start to show some blur at ISO 400. Quality remains steady through ISO 1600, but there's more noticeable degradation at ISO 3200 and 6400. At the top setting, ISO 12800, all detail has given way to blur. The Sony Alpha 6000 captures JPG images at ISO 6400 that show similar noise and detail to the M10's output at ISO 1600. More serious photographers may choose to shoot in Raw format. Raw photos don't have noise reduction applied, but need to be processed in specialized software. I used the industry standard, Adobe Lightroom $ at AdobeOpens in a new window , to convert images from our ISO test scene. The camera does a better job here, lagging behind the Alpha 6000's Raw output by just a bit through ISO 6400. At ISO 12800 there's a lot of noise and blur. Given the lower pixel count, the EOS M10 should have an advantage in noise control when compared with the Sony camera, but it doesn't. You get more resolution, crisper detail, and lower noise from the 24-megapixel Alpha 6000 when shooting in Raw format. Video is recorded in MP4 format at up to 1080p30 quality—60fps is an option when shooting at 720p. Video quality is a mixed bag. Details can be a bit murky in wide shots, but footage is crisper when working closer up. Still, I've seen better video from mirrorless cameras. The autofocus system does a good job reacting to changes in the scene, and adjusts the focus with a pleasant, slow rack. The built-in mic can pick up audio clearly when the subject is close to the camera, but it also picks up a lot of ambient noise. There's no way to add an external microphone. One quirk of note—if you have the self-timer enabled for stills, it will also delay the start of video recording. That's something I've never seen a camera do. ConclusionsIf at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Canon's initial mirrorless effort felt like a first-generation product, and one that arrived years too late. The company has improved autofocus performance in the line—the EOS M3 and EOS M10 both benefit from this—but still lags behind competing systems. Add in middling image quality in low light, a very limited native lens system, and a price that's on the high side for an entry-level model and one thing is clear—Canon has some more work to do to compete in the mirrorless segment. The EOS M10 does have some redeeming features It's quite compact though not as tiny as the Panasonic GM1, the few lenses that are available are solid performers, and the body is sturdily constructed—it's one of the few entry-level mirrorless models that is assembled in Japan. But there are better mirrorless cameras out there. Our favorite low-cost model is the Olympus PEN E-PL6, which omits Wi-Fi but costs just $300 with a lens, while the best midrange model is the Sony Alpha 6000. Pros Compact design.
